Bangkok is laced with canals, though which rush incredibly long taxis at surprising speeds.

Running overhead is a very modern elevated train, which is the subject of endless scandals. Indeed, Thai politics seems to be an endless story of deception, corruption, and drama. This scandal basically revolves around the fact that the SkyTrain doesn't really go efficiently from anywhere to anywhere else, nor is it designed with growth in mind. Kinda like the Detroit "peoplemover", but more modern.
It's a bit hard to make out what's going on in the picture, but that's because it was hard to make out in reality, too. It's a picture of one of the countless canals cutting across Bangkok, but this one has a big hole in it. Specifically, steel walls were erected in a box and then pumped dry, presumably to work on the riverbed (canalbed?) beneath. This created a big traffic jam for the water taxis, which normally run at extreme speeds through the narrow canals.
I've never lived in a city with an elevated train, but I found it particularly fun to ride. It's like a subway, but set out in the open air above a busy street where the humid wind blows coolly across the deck and the city noises can be heard clearly.
