Circling the city in concentric rings are a series of canals, spanning which are many small drawbridges. Of course, the only boats I've seen ply the waters are these super-long, super-low tourcraft that zip under bridges with a foot's clearance in all directions.
When asked what I liked to do by a travel agent at the very start of my trip, I said that I'm more of a wanderer, and generally don't like to "see the sights". As an example, I said "I'd be fine going to Paris and not seeing the Eifel tower." It would appear that I was right -- the only Paris I saw was between one train station and another, and no tower in sight. Incidentally, the Paris subway is gorgeous.
Ireland is such a great country in which to travel I'm consistenly amazed to hear that most Brits just never bother to check it out, despite being just a few hours away. I mean, my entire life everyone I've known has dreamt of the opportunity of cruising its majestic shores and lying in the iradescent-green grass. And, now that I've done it, I'm happy to say that it's worth the trip. So to all of you in the UK, or British Isles, or whatever crazy name you've conceived for yourselves -- get over to Ireland and check it out.
Though my time in Scottland was short, I managed to make enough of it. I mean, how many people can honestly say they've drawn on a stranger's breasts, met the world's record holder for facial piercings, and eaten fresh steaming haggis all in under four days?
