After the disappointment at the Cistine Chapel, I was overawed by St. George's Cathedral. I have simply never imagined anything that huge stood on Earth. Accordingly, none of my photographs came anywhere near doing it justice.

However, a big attraction is walking up to the top of the dome to look out over the city. The walkway up to the dome is very steep and narrow -- not for the claustrophobic or faint of heart. The best part is when the walkway is parallel to the ground and about 2' across, but the walls are at a 45 degree angle.

Now, I really hate to sound like a travel snob -- you know, the guy that goes someplace and then spends all his time telling you how it's not worth seeing -- but the Cistine Chapel just isn't worth seeing. I mean, everyone's seen that little section where God and Adam are touching fingers, and I don't dispute it's a nice picture. However, it's set in the middle of about ten thousand other pictures, all of which have mostly-naked people hanging out on clouds and doing strange things. Overall, the entire thing just looks silly. He should have quit while he was ahead. It's like some flesh-tone addict went on a graffiti binge in his bedroom. Granted, they're detailed and nice pictures. But, as the immortal Bob Ross once said, the key is choosing when to stop. Just say no.

Incidentally, photos are absolutely forbidden in the chapel, so rather than being disturbed by the insidiosuly noisy cameras, you are lulled into a sense of grandeur by the security guard loudly threatening and remo... [more]
