Just north of the South Carolina border is Crazy D's Firework Outlet. I expected it to be little more than a gas station where I could stop and get something to drink, but it turned out to be so much more.

Like most truck stops, Crazy D's one is equipped with a state-of-the-art talking robotic rooster. Perched next to the cash register to greet new guests, Ricky is connected to a secret microphone attached to the woman behind the counter. Between the microphone and rooster is some sort of voice-modulation gear, making Ricky sound almost, but not entirely unlike Doctor Claw speaking from beyond the grave.

Apparently Rooster serves a greater purpose than just communing with the dead. Because the rest of the store is filled with fragile and downright dangerous items, Ricky's antics keep children from wandering around and getting into trouble.
The back of Crazy D's brings back all the good memories of candy shops, but that's not candy.
Along with Ricky, Honey pulls his own at Crazy D's. This little cocker spaniel actually goes out and takes payment from the morning regulars, right up to the cashier (next to Ricky). I held out a dollar and he grabbed it right out of my hand with a minimum of slobber, walked over to the cash register, and hopped up on a stool. Man's best friend in action.
